Humane Meat is an Oxymoron

Recently it has come to our attention that a number of our fellow animal rights activists are supporting an organization which campaigns for "humane" meat and even advertises meat and other animal products on its website.

We at Freedom for Animals do not think that we should be encouraging meat-eaters to continue to delude themselves that they can continue eating meat without causing animal suffering.

If it's not vegan, it's not cruelty-free.

Heavenly Creatures

We at Freedom for Animals would like to express our concern about the baseless accusations St. John's Mayor Andy Wells has recently levelled against Heavenly Creatures, a no-kill animal rescue in St. John's, Newfoundland.

One of Freedom for Animals' campaigns is operating the Kensington Market Stray Cat Rescue. Like Heavenly Creatures, we have a "no kill" policy. We know that rescuing animals is physically and emotionally demanding work, especially for those of us who are unwilling to kill animals who may be difficult to find homes for. Operating a no-kill rescue is a deep commitment, and as such we find that Mayor Wells' claims that Heavenly Creatures is sending animals to other facilities to be killed is completely lacking in credibility.

Mayor Wells has alluded to one unfortunate incident in which an animal from Heavenly Creatures injured someone. Our rescue co-ordinator, Suzanne Lahaie, has decades of experience working with animals both as a rescuer and on a farm. Animals, especially those from an unknown background, are unpredicatable, and any organization which helps as many animals as Heavenly Creatures does will occasionally have accidents. This incident says nothing about the competence and caring of the people at Heavenly Creatures.

Rather than condemning organizations like Heavenly Creatures, which work very hard to make the world a better place, Mayor Wells should be supporting their important, life-saving work.

OSPCA devastated by fire

A fire has destroyed the Midland branch of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Tragically, over 30 animals died in the fire. However, over 30 cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies were saved. The OSPCA urgently needs donations to help with care of the survivors and rebuilding the Midland branch. Visit the OSPCA site for more info about the tragedy and how you can help.

Who killed coyote and pups?

From the OSPCA:

NEWMARKET, ON, (February 9, 2006) - The Ontario SPCA is calling on the public for any information related to the death and mutilation of an adult female coyote and two coyote pups found on the York University Keele campus in late January.

On January 30 the Ontario SPCA was notified of the incident by Toronto Police, 31 Division. The remains of the animals were found in a thick, clear plastic bag behind the Beatrice Ice Gardens, located at the northwest periphery of the University's Keele Campus. The animals had been skinned from the waist up and beheaded, with ears, eyes and nose removed. There is no clear indication whether the incident occurred on the University campus, or if the bodies were disposed there afterwards. The bodies have been sent for a necropsy.

The coordinated investigative effort between the Ontario SPCA, Toronto Animal Services, Toronto Police and York University Security Services has not yet turned up any leads in finding who was involved with the death and disposal of the animals. "We are appealing to members of the public who may have any information related to the case," says Sarah Jones, Ontario SPCA Inspector. "If anyone has seen or heard anything that may help us we would greatly appreciate their assistance."

If you have information that may help further the investigation, please contact Inspector Sarah Jones at (905) 898-7122/ 1-888-668-7722, ext. 338. Information can be left anonymously.

Ask Fairweather to Stop Selling Fur

Activist Michaela Sandhu has started a campaign to get Fairweather to stop selling fur.

She has provided contact information and an excellent letter (which you could copy, but it's better to write your own).

Our efforts can really make a difference! Recently, Global Action Network succeeded in getting Jacob to go fur-free!

Please, grab a paper and pen and write a letter to Fairweather now!

Visit Ontario, and Your Dog Could Be Killed

The pit bull ban in Ontario is a threat to dogs of other breeds, and dogs visiting Ontario. It is illegal for tourists to bring along their pitbulls, and the penalty is death. Even if your dog is not a pit bull, s/he could be mistakenly considered a pit bull by the authorities. See full details from Caveat.

Freedom for Animals believes that irresponsible owners should be blamed for dog attacks, not innocent dogs who happen to be the same breed. Please write to the Minister of Tourism and tell him that the pit bull ban will cost Ontario tourist dollars!

Do you trust your vet?

Freedom for Animals is compiling a list of recommended Toronto veterinarians. If you would like to recommend your vet, please email webstuff @ freeanimals.org.

We are looking in particular for a vet who is supportive of natural medicine and can make housecalls, but any good vet can be added to our list.

Kensington Market Stray Cat  Rescue

Freedom for Animals offers the Kensington Market Stray Cat Rescue to rescue homeless cats in this Toronto neighbourhood.

Please call us at 416-699-6669 if you can help with fostering a cat or two. Financial donations are always greatly appreciated. Now you can also donate securely online using your credit card!

Due to limited resources such as finances, volunteers, and foster homes, we are only able to rescue strays in the Kensington Market area. There is a crisis of strays in every part of the city and we encourage neighbourhood cat rescues. If you are looking for a home for a cat, we can recommend other rescues and hopefully they can help if they are able to.

What We Stand For

The gift of life is precious. We all have opportunities in our lives to offer compassion to other animals in need.

Freedom for Animals believes that animals should live freely, without being oppressed and abused by our own species. We oppose any exploitive use of animals, be it for food, clothing, science, entertainment, or sports. We work to expose cruelty in all these areas.

Through education, direct action, research, lobbying, media outreach, art, and all other creative, nonviolent means, our goal is to work together with activists both locally and globally to build a strong animal rights movement.

Principles

  • We regard all forms of oppression and exploitation as inter-related: animal abuse, human rights violations, and ecological destruction.
  • Our guiding principle is nonviolence.
